Internet and Connectivity

Throughout 2005, a variety of discussions, events, conferences and workshops have taken place around broadband; making way for some critical decisions regarding connecting neighbourhoods or even whole cities.

Internet and connectivity are key enablers of 21st Century Technologies. During the past year, broadband internet connectivity has grown rapidly, while dial-up connections have continued to decline. Wireless broadband has also enjoyed rapid growth as one of the most cost effective ways of delivering broadband to deprived communities and rural areas.

Internet Statistics
  • 64% of adults in Great Britain (29 million) had accessed the Internet in October 2005
  • The most common place to access the Internet was at home (86%)
  • 48% accessed at work, 33% at another's person's home, 16% at a place of education and 10% at a public library.

In 2006, it is envisaged that various wireless broadband communities will continue to develop across the UK and Europe.
